Peter Tecklenburg was first elected Charleston County Auditor in 2012. In this role, he oversees mileage calculations for 43 tax districts and manages the preparation of nearly one million property tax bills each year. Supported by a dedicated team working from four offices across the county, he has made customer service and operational efficiency central to his leadership.

Recognized statewide as an innovator, Tecklenburg has modernized the Auditor’s Office into one of South Carolina’s most technologically advanced county agencies. He administers the state’s Homestead Exemption program within Charleston County and has introduced initiatives that have returned millions of dollars to local taxpayers.

The Auditor's Office is responsible for assessing taxes on real estate, mobile homes, motor vehicles, watercraft, aircraft, and business personal property. Tecklenburg has earned recognition for his work on watercraft taxation reform—legislative changes that created benefits for both taxpayers and local governments.

With more than two decades of experience in local government, Tecklenburg has seen major shifts in public administration and remains committed to responsive, forward-thinking leadership. He holds a master’s degree from the University of South Carolina, where he focused on local government and taxation, and a bachelor’s degree in political science with a minor in international relations from Seton Hall University.

His professional honors include being named a “Forty Under 40” honoree by the Charleston Regional Business Journal, a Riley Diversity Fellow at Furman University, and a “One in a Million” award recipient from the Jefferson Awards Foundation. He has served on numerous local and statewide boards, including Bon Secours St. Francis Hospital, the SCETV Endowment, and the Jefferson Awards Foundation. Additionally, he has been a board member and campaign cabinet member for Trident United Way and chaired its Palmetto Society from 2023–2025.

Tecklenburg currently serves as co-chair of the Department of Natural Resources (DNR) Committee for the South Carolina Association of Auditors, Treasurers, and Tax Collectors (SCATT).

In a county that encompasses both urban and rural communities, he has been a strong advocate for preserving rural character. His efforts have fostered partnerships with land conservation organizations and advanced initiatives addressing Heirs’ Property concerns. His focus on responsive governance has also led to programs that support service members, businesses, and local governments.

Deeply committed to public service, Tecklenburg comes from a family with a long tradition of community involvement—his grandfather Henry served as Charleston County Auditor in the 1960s, and his uncle John served two terms as Mayor of Charleston. A lifelong Charlestonian, Peter and his wife Stephanie are raising their twin daughters West of the Ashley, just over a mile from where he grew up.
