Voter Accessibility Advisory Committee

The Voting Accessibility Advisory Committee (VAAC) is established to provide advice and recommendations to Charleston County Board of Voter Registration and Elections (BVRE) staff on matters related to voting accessibility. The committee's role includes identifying barriers to voting, proposing solutions, and enhancing the voting experience for individuals with disabilities in Charleston County.

The purpose of the VAAC is to ensure all Charleston County voters, regardless of disabilities, can fully and equally participate in elections. Specific tasks and goals include:

  • Identifying and addressing barriers in the voting process, from registration to casting a ballot.
  • Ensuring accessibility of information on BVRE’s website and other materials.
  • Recruiting election workers with disabilities.
  • Ensuring compliance with the Americans with Disabilities Act (ADA) and improving polling place accessibility.
  • Educating voters with disabilities on available services and resources.
  • Providing recommendations for ongoing and future accessibility improvements.
  • Empowering partners with knowledge to advocate for changes at the state level.
  • Creating a polling place accessibility checklist to be implemented at all Election Day and Early Voting locations.
  • Providing input on improving poll manager training to cover accessibility considerations.
