Fugitive / Extradition Unit #fugitive_extradition

The Fugitives and Extraditions Unit of the Sheriff's Office works together with the Warrants Unit, local, state and federal law enforcement in an attempt to identify and locate fugitives from justice. The goal of this unit is to track down wanted suspects who have fled the State of South Carolina in order to avoid prosecution as well as those that have fled to South Carolina from other states. The Extradition unit is responsible for returning fugitive suspects to Charleston County to await trial. The Fugitives and Extraditions Unit also assists in the completion of the documentation required for the return of a fugitive back to the state where they are wanted.

Question: What is an extradition?

Answer: An extradition is the surrender of an accused or convicted person by one state or country to another. This is provided for in South Carolina under State Statute Title 17 Chapter 9, which also qualifies an extraditable offense as one in which the offense committed, within any state, as any offense which by the law of the state in which the offense was committed is punishable either capitally or by imprisonment for one year or upwards in any state prison.

Question: Who determines if a warrant is granted extradition from another state back to South Carolina?

Question: What should I do if I think I know the whereabouts of a possible fugitive?

Answer: Contact your local law enforcement agency on their designated administrative non-emergency line if there is no emergency, or call the Charleston County Sheriff's Office directly at (843) 202-1700 or click on one of the links listed below depending on where the wanted person is located to find contact information for that police agency. If the warrant is of a more serious nature you may still call the Warrants Office at the number listed above to make arrangements to turn yourself in.
